Is Your Faith Blind? Give it some Sight (Insight)!

I believe most Christians would say, when asked, if they believed the Bible literally, “Yes., of course I do.” The fact is, it is not completely literal. There are over 212 different kinds of Figures of Speech. Here are some definitions of a figure of speech:

a word or phrase used in a nonliteral sense to add rhetorical force to a spoken or written passage.

a form of expression (as a simile or metaphor) used to convey meaning or heighten effect often by comparing or identifying one thing with another that has a meaning or connotation familiar to the reader or listener

An expression that uses language in a nonliteral way, such as a metaphor or synecdoche, or in a structured or unusual way, such as anaphora or chiasmus, or that employs sounds, such as alliteration or assonance, to achieve a rhetorical effect.

an expression in which words are used in a nonliteral sense, as in metaphor, or in an unusual construction, as in antithesis, or for their sounds, as in onomatopoeia, to suggest vivid images or to heighten effect.

E.W. Bullinger says in his Companion Bible, “Ignorance of Figures of speech has led to the grossest errors, which have been caused either from taking literally what is figurative, or from taking figuratively what is literal.”

In the Gospels, Jesus spoke in many Parables. Parables or Parabola, is one such figure, an extended simile. Look for the message beyond the nonliteral story being told. In Matthew 13:1-52 Jesus tells a lot of parables which cannot be taken literally, like that of The Sower, Tares Among Wheat, The Mustard Seed, The Leaven, Hidden Treasure, A Costly Pearl and The Kingdom of Heaven.

There are 31 usages of the word “parable” and 16 of parable(s) in the Gospels. Luke chapters 12-21 are full of parables. In addition, there are many other figures of speech within the Parables. In look 12:32, Jesus refers to Herod as a fox. This is one of my favorite figures, hypocatastasis, an implied resemblance or representation. This same figure is used in Genesis 3 where Satan is referred to as a serpent; It no more means a snake than it does in Ge. 49:17 where Dan is called the same.

My favorite Parable for the sake of this teaching is The Rich Man and Lazarus in Luke 16:19. Taking verses 19-31 literal is one of the grossest errors Bullinger referred to. Lazarus was not carried away by angels to Abraham’s bosom when he died. The rich man was not in Hades being tormented, after he died. He did not see Lazarus in Abraham’s bosom far away. Yet, I have personally been told by many brothers and sisters in Christ that this is proof that Christians go to Heaven immediately after they die and sinners go to Hell. Nothing could be further from the truth!

The point of this parable is given in the final verses:

Luke 16:29-31
“But Abraham said, (he didn’t really say anything, he’s dead)’They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.’ 30 “But he said, ‘No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent!’ 31 “But he said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be persuaded even if someone rises from the dead.(like me, Jesus)‘”
NASU

ARE YOU LISTENING?

ANGRY YET? IF NOT, YOU SHOULD BE.

The Bible, says  that it is okay to get angry: “BE ANGRY” (about certain things), “YET WITHOUT SIN,” in Ephesians 4:26.  Yes, it should make us angry when, as the preceding verse implies, we are surrounded by LIARS. We have many examples in the world today of people who are angry and sin because of their anger. Anger is an innate emotion that we are not to be denied. I am angry that some government officials think they can get away with murder, instead of just telling the truth.

2 Co 10:4 tells us “(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) KJV. Taking matters into our own hands is not the answer.  The WEAPONS OF OUR WARFARE ARE MIGHTY THROUGH GOD. Our anger, our outrage, needs to be taken to God through our prayers. The previous verse in 2 Co 10 says, “For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh:” The way we carry on our warfare is spiritual, not physically.

In the final chapter of the greatest revelation given to the Church of the Body of Christ, Paul, by way of our Lord, Jesus Christ says:

Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.
11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;
15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.
17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;  Eph 6:10-18
Yes, we should be angry about what is going on in high places in our country and around the world today. Taking matters into our own hands as the two domestic terrorists recently did is not the answer.  Fervent Prayer Is.

Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. Jas 5:16

The Company (School) of the Prophets

2. Prophet Samuel

2. Prophet Samuel (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Have you ever heard of “The Company (School) of the Prophets?”

After Saul was anointed King of Israel, the prophet Samuel prophesied several things to him which are recorded in 1Sam 10.

1 Sa 10:5
After that thou shalt come to the hill of God, where is the garrison of the Philistines: and it shall come to pass, when thou art come thither to the city, that thou shalt meet a company* of prophets
KJV
Samuel told Saul to join himself to them and he would become a new man:

1 Sa 10:6
And the Spirit of the Lord will come upon thee, and thou shalt prophesy with them, and shalt be turned into another man.
KJV
People say that things of this nature cannot be learned, yet here is a clear example that they can be.

1 Sa 10:9-10
And it was so, that when he had turned his back to go from Samuel, God gave him another heart: and all those signs came to pass that day.
10 And when they came thither to the hill, behold, a company of prophets met him; and the spirit of God came upon him, and he prophesied among them.
KJV
People were astonished by this! That this guy whom they knew all their lives and who knew his father could be prophesying among the band of prophets:

1 Sa 10:11
11 It came about, when all who knew him previously saw that he prophesied now with the prophets, that the people said to one another, “What has happened to the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?”
NASU

Could this happen to you? I have personally felt this calling upon my life since I was born again in 1974. In the spring/summer of ’75 I served under the tutelage of a man with this function for 3 months, day in and day out. In August of that year I was sent to serve under another prophet for a year. After that year I moved in with him and his family and lived on the property with them for the next 3 years. At the end of that time, he united my wife and I in Holy Matrimony.

If you have read anything about the prophets you know that they were not particularly popular among the group they were called to prophesy to. Many were killed by them including our Lord. I know that there are some people reading this who feel this calling upon their lives and it is my intention to make this obvious to you and in turn, those to whom you personally minister, your sphere of influence.

The vast majority of the time a prophet prophesies, it is not foretelling the future, but forth-telling, calling God’s people back to His Word; showing them where they are OFF the Word (which few enjoy) and showing them how to get back ON the Word. This will prove to be an exciting venture.  I look forward to hearing from you.

God bless.

JESUS CHRIST, OUR PASSOVER

As you all know, this is the holiest week on the Christian Calendar. Even though approximately 1/3 of the 4 Gospels combined is about this week, many do not understand much of it. The following is something I wrote many years ago on the subject. I hope you enjoy it.

JESUS CHRIST, OUR PASSOVER

Why is Passover relevant to the Christian? Glad you asked. We all know Jesus Christ was considered the Lamb of God, but why? If you have studied the Word of God at all, you will know that Jesus and his disciples “prepared” for the Passover, a Jewish time of commemoration. The beginning of Passover always started on the 14th on Nisan, with the slaying of the Passover Lamb some time before sunset. Even though Jesus “prepared” to eat the Passover with the disciples, he did not eat it with them. Instead he, figuratively, became the Passover Lamb, which was sacrificed for us.

1 Co 5:7……..For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us: KJV

(The Last Supper was the last time the disciples had a meal together with Christ before him being crucified on a tree and raised from the dead. IT WAS NOT THE PASSOVER MEAL. Besides the timeline, the type of bread eaten at the Last Supper was forbidden during the Passover and the the ensuing 7 day period of the Feast of Unleavened bread.)

Furthermore, Jesus was dead in the grave with no consciousness for 3 full days and 3 full nights = 72 hours. There is no way to fit 3 full days and 3 full nights between Sunset Friday and Sunrise Sunday. Therefore, there is no such thing as Good Friday! Jesus Christ, our Passover Lamb, was sacrificed for us and was buried on a Wednesday around sunset beginning the 1st night (Thursday). At dawn Thursday began the first day. At sunset Thurs. began the 2nd night of Friday, then Friday day; then Fri at sunset began the 3rd night, Saturday; then Saturday at sunset completed the 3 days and 3 nights. Sunset Sat. began Sunday night, the 1st day of the week:

Jn 20:1 The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre. KJV

Jesus was already gone. Mary was 10-11 hours late, depending on Daylight Savings Tim. (By the time she got there he had already been to Tartarus, showing himself alive to those angels in chains who left their original state to cohabitate with the daughters of humans on the earth.)

One of the biggest points of misunderstanding is not understanding this verse:

John 19:31 “Then the Jews, because it was the day of preparation, so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.”

You see, the day Jesus was crucified was not the day before the weekly Sabbath but it was the day of Preparation, when they “PREPARED” for the “high day,” a special Sabbath before the weekly Sabbath. That Day of Preparation was the day they prepared to sacrifice the Passover Lamb, which that year coincided with the Feast of Unleavened Bread! The bread the disciples ate at the last supper was leavened, not unleavened!

Another support for Jesus being dead 3 days and 3 nights, is Jonah:

Matthew 12:40 For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the sea monster, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

In case some of you are still not convinced, maybe Jesus can convince you:

John 11:9
[9]Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. Since days are 12 hours it stands to reason that nights are as well. 3 days = 36 hours; 3 nights the same.

I am happy to sit down with any of you to discuss this further if you so desire.

God bless,

When you least expect it You may find yourself exactly where you are supposed to be.

Here it is the end of February and my primary New Year’s resolution of promoting my new book seems to have taken a backseat to work. Since retiring from the Landlord business in Arizona some five years ago I began doing odd jobs for folks here in the beach communities of LA County. It seems my services are much needed with the skill set I acquired over the last thirty four years being a roofing contractor and a property manager. I recently made the decision to let my California real estate license expire and am looking to buy a replacement work vehicle to be able to efficiently carry more tools.

My business motto is “No Job Too Small.” My services range from  changing light bulbs for elderly widows, to managing the maintenance of a 20 unit apartment building in Santa Monica, to a variety of projects for an eccentric millionaire on Venice Beach. Last year I persuaded the latter individual to partner with me in a boat which we keep in the water here in Marina Del Rey. I think he saw this as a kind of retainer for keeping me nearby, since he rarely goes on it. Yes, God it truly blessing me from areas one can only dream about.

A few weeks back I was in a local market to get a twelve pack of Rolling Rock on a Friday evening for the boat. At the head of the line was a strikingly tall, blonde female in sunglasses. I was inspired to walk up to her. When I did, I asked her if she had an extra $20. She lowered her glasses and asked me, “what for?” I then pointed to one of my books I had put on consignment with the owner, to the lower shelf of the magazine rack. She picked it up, recognizing the picture on the front cover of the Eastern Gate of the wall around Jerusalem. She told me she was one of seventeen children from an Irish Catholic family, who loved religion, but not necessarily that one. She handed the book to the cashier who then handed it back to me for signing. I walked her out of the store, thanking her for buying my book and she told me she was only in town for a few days and lived in South America.

What are the chances of something like that happening on purpose? When my wife and I pray in the morning we generally ask God to direct our steps during our coming day. We never know where we are going to be lead, but know we must always be prepared for when we get there. When God knows your heart, as mine is in marketing my book, He will help you “kill 2 birds with one stone.” The last thing I wanted to do, moving to California five years ago, was to be in a business where people depended on me. But, that is where I find myself. God’s ways are not our ways; His plans, not ours.

If you find yourself what you believe to possibly be “off course,” think again. It may not be the course you had planned but is most likely the one He did. Grow where you have been planted. The answer you may be looking for is usually right under your nose.

God bless,

P.S. The Barnes & Noble in Marina Del Rey is now stocking my book. I hope they sell out soon. You can also order it from any brick and mortar bookstore or on line at http://www.fredswolfe.com.

REVIVAL? WHO ARE WE KIDDING?

A lot of people have been talking about how much a Revival in the church is needed. I couldn’t agree more but think it is next to impossible, if not impossible. There are many reasons I think it is impossible since the church is so far removed from the precepts of the 1st Century Church. For example :

  • The True Church is the Body of Christ, not the bride of Christ, 1 Corinthians 12:27
  • It was to be built upon the foundation of Paul, not the 4 Gospels, 1 Cor. 3:10-12
  • Jesus was born, came into existence, as a descendant of David, Mt. 1:1
  • He did not preexist his birth or live before he was born, not reincarnated Mt. 1:18
  • God is not in control of the world, Satan is, 2 Cor. 4:4, Lk. 4:6
  • the Holy Spirit is not something separate from God, but is God; Ps. 99:9, Jn. 4:24,
  • God is the Holy Spirit while the devil is the unholy spirit
  • the dead in Christ are dead, along with every other person who has lived and died, 1 Thess. 4:16, Job 14:12, Ps. 13:3, Acts 13:36, 1 Cor. 11:30
  • water baptism serves no purpose other than an “emotional” high and was replaced by “spirit” baptism, Acts 1:8, 11:16
  • The Secret, as revealed to Paul by the ascended Christ, is all but unknown to the church, let alone understood, Eph. 3:1-9, Ro. 16:25,26, Col. 1:25-29
  • Jesus, before his ascension, was limited in knowledge, Mt. 16:28, 24:36, Mk. 9:1, 13:32, Lk. 9:27
  • there is nothing written in the 4 Gospels about the Rapture, it is part of the Secret, first revealed to Paul, 2 Thess. 2:1-3
  • what is written in the gospels that the church thinks is about the Rapture, is in reality the 2nd coming of Christ, when the Church comes with him to the earth, 2 Thess. 1:7b-10
  • this is when Jesus returns as King of kings and Lord of lords, Rev 17:14, 19:16
  • the Kingdom of God, when His Son Jesus will be King, will be set up after the battle of Armagedon, in Israel, for 1,000 years,
  • the Kingdom of God and of His Son is still in the future, not on the earth today
  • the 9 manifestations of the Spirit (miscalled gifts) are to be in operation in every church, all the time, that the Church may be edified, 1 Cor. 14:5,12,26
  • the “equipping” ministries are to be in operation in the church for its edifying also, Eph. 4:12,16,29
  • the Temple is the entire Body of Christ, not the individual, the individual is the tabernacle, 2 Cor. 5:1-4

These are but a few of the the things that today’s church have been mislead to believe or not to believe. How can there possibly any profitable revival when so much error is being practiced in the church? The word revival begins with “re” meaning to do again, do over. Here are a few definitions of revival:

  1. The act of reviving, or the state of being revived.
  2. Renewed attention to something, as to letters or literature.
  3. Renewed performance of, or interest in, something, as the drama and literature.
  4. Renewed interest in religion, after indifference and decline; a period of religious awakening; special religious interest.

The Church of the Body of Christ definitely needs a “do-over,” I will agree. But how many are willing to throw away 1700 years of error, steeped in tradition to do so? Our only hope is the gathering together of the saints, when Christ will settle it all at the Bema, where those who built upon the foundation Paul laid will be rewarded and those who did not will suffer loss. 1 Cor. 3

Misconceptions About the Coming of Christ

The reason there is so much misunderstanding about the Return of Christ, is that he does not just return once. The actual aspects of his Return are rolled up in the word Parousia, Coming. Jesus’ ministry was to the lost sheep of the house of Israel, Jews.

The 2nd Coming of Christ will be for the sake of Jews as well. But, there is another aspect of the Parousia that is not recorded in the Gospels of Mt, Mk, Lk, or Jn. The reason it is not recorded there is because no one knew anything about it, including Jesus.

No one knew anything about this aspect of the Parousia until it was revealed to Paul the apostle, by the ascended Christ. Jesus and the apostles expected him to come back 7 years after his ascension. The time that has lapsed between then and now is that of the Sacred Secret, which was hidden in God from the foundation of the world.

The event that serves as the end of this time period is Christ’s Coming for his Saints, those of us who have believed without first seeing. This aspect of the Coming of Christ is commonly known as The Rapture of the Church. There is nothing written about it in the gospels or the Book of Revelation.

1 Th 4:16-17
For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.
17 Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord. NASU

At the Rapture, Jesus does not set a foot on the earth; he is not on a white horse; he is not prepared for battle; and no one else sees him at all; he comes part way from Heaven to meet us and we return with him. No fanfare, no earthquakes, no fire from Heaven, etc. Additionally there will be no sign to prepare you if you are not all ready now.

What you read about in the gospels, Revelation and a few places in the epistles is when he returns 7 years later “with” us.

1 Th 3:13
so that He may establish your hearts without blame in holiness before our God and Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all His saints. NASU

God bless,

Are You Willing to be Criticized?

Happy New Year Everyone!

We are 2 weeks into 2013. Has it taken you by storm? Do you feel more in control of things in your life than you did last year? Or do you feel like you are being swept out to sea by the wave of public opinion?

Those of us who stood for truth during the last election were bitterly demonized for our positions. We were called divisive, unpatriotic, trouble-makers, fabricators, spoil sports, poor losers, etc. Even members of our own families said such things.

As you all know life is a spiritual battle. If you did not personally experience anything like this, then I would say that you need to get in the fight and quit watching the parade of life pass you by. In Real Estate we call the silent majority “Looky Lews;” people who come to an Open House just to see it, with no interest at all in making an offer, getting involved. Are you just a “stander-by?”

I recently watched a video posted on Facebook by David Wells about the  spiritual forces  grinding down Americans. Throughout the video I am thinking ahead about what one person can do to rebuttal. Suggestions were given at the end of just that. One of them was “to be willing to be criticized.” Most people I know would shudder at the thought. Criticism, whether giving it or receiving it, has been completely vilified in our society. Being able to be criticized for what you believe takes integrity. Knowing what you believe to be true and truthful makes being criticized a badge of courage rather than one of disgrace.

Did you know that the biggest Critic in life is God and His Word, the Bible. All the great believers throughout the ages were severely criticized for their words and deeds. Most of them were accused of heresy, including our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. The political leaders of his time were out to murder him from the get go, just because some Persian men said they were looking for him who was born to be the King of the Jews. He hadn’t even done anything to deserve death and didn’t when they finally succeeded thirty years later! Are you willing to die for what you believe? Is what you believe willing to die for?

One of my fellow-labourers in the Word, John Lynn, has done a few teachings on “Words—Words Have Meaning.” People live and die by words everyday. In order for words to have any affect on anyone, they have to be written or spoken. If you are not into writing, then you need to be into speaking. People need to know what you believe; your neighbors need to know what you stand for. What are you afraid of? Criticism, Embarrassment? Being afraid to be who you are is the worst.

We see this in the pre-resurrection Peter. He actually denied Jesus six times, but 3 will suffice. Many of the men who followed Jesus before his murder were in hiding afterwards for four days. They were scared to death. They were probably wondering what they got themselves into, why they didn’t just leave well enough alone and keep doing what they were doing before they met that troublemaker, Jesus. Now they were all in the stew. What had they done?

What they did, is what we need to do: stick our necks out for what we believe. Be willing to be criticized and if need be be willing to have our necks chopped off for doing so.  The husband being the head of the wife, is just that: we stick our necks out for our wives just as Christ stuck/sticks his neck out for us. Don’t feel helpless, it is God in Christ in You. You are a majority wherever you go, whatever you do and whatever you say. If God be for us (and He is) who can be against us?

What a Fool I have Been!

I have to admit, I have been a fool in 2012, just like I have been since 1974; a fool for Christ, that is. I actually expect him to return someday, and someday he will. When he does, no one will know right away. I am sure there have been many times since his departure that many people expected him to return before they died. Yet, they all died, just like Moses, Enoch and Paul, who have yet to see him return.

The believers of Hitler’s time must have thought Hitler was the Antichrist; surely they believed Christ would return before he was able to do so many horrible things. The point is, there are no signs to indicate his return for the believers of this day and age. The Rapture of the Church is a part of the Sacred Secret, that was kept a secret by God until He revealed unto the apostle Paul, through Jesus Christ.

No one, including Jesus Christ, before his ascension, knew anything about the time in which we now live. It stands to reason that there can be no signs in the Bible as to when this Age will end, since no one knew when it would begin. All this and more is in my book at www.fredswolfe.com. If you did not read it this past year, you owe it to yourself, your children and your grandchildren to do so. Since there are no signs announcing the Rapture (Part 1 of the Parousia) there will be no time to prepare for it. If you are not ready now, you could very well be left behind.

If you are left behind, my book will tell you what to expect and how to make it through the Great Tribulation into the Millennial Kingdom where Christ will reign as King of kings and Lord of lords. It will be a thousand years that you will not want to miss. God bless you and happy new year.

Thank God for The Fiscal Cliff and ………….

English: Peter Schiff speaking

English: Peter Schiff speaking (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

………the men and women we have elected who are willing to go over it! I recently heard Peter Schiff* speak on the subject and his sentiments were exactly ours. The Fiscal Cliff is the ominous name given to the opportunity we have to put us back on our economic axis. I thank God for the Republicans who are standing on the principle of not increasing the tax rates for anyone. Today they are being demonized, but far down the road they will be viewed as true Statesman.

Going over the cliff is a bullet we need to bite. We have all heard of “kicking the can down the road” many times. This is the expression that has been coined for not standing up to the fiscal responsibility we have been faced with since the collapse of Lehman Brothers and Bear-Stearns. They were allowed to fail and so should have all those who came after them, who were instead “bailed out” by the Federal Reserve. Since our monetary policy was taken off the gold standard, the only thing valuing our currency was and is our and others’ faith in our government and its credibility.

Every time the Federal Reserve prints more greenbacks, the purchasing power of them drops. When we hear announcements of near zero interest rates until 2015 and a commitment to invest = spend = print $40 billion per month ad infinitum it should make us cringe. The mother of all train wrecks is on its way and it is called inflation. The Federal Reserve has even been able to manipulate this monster, but a day is coming when even it will reign uncontrollably at our expense and possible demise.

Satan is the “god” of this Age. Israel and the U.S. of A. are the only 2 vestiges of Hope left in the world today and we are on our way out. Who do you see having more influence in our government and society today than anyone/thing else, the One True God or the One False god? Satan’s single three-fold desire is to steal, kill and destroy.

To steal is to stealthfully take away.

To kill primarily denotes “to offer firstfruits to a god”; then (a) “to sacrifice by slaying a victim,” Ac 14:13,18, to do sacrifice; 1 Co 10:20, to sacrifice; to pay homage, offer sacrifices to a god, and becoming the sacrifice itself.**

To destroy is a strengthened form of ollumi, signifies “to destroy utterly”; in middle voice, “to perish.” The idea is not extinction but ruin, loss, not of being, but of wellbeing. **

This is exactly what has been occurring to the American People under the leadership of several of our past Presidents.  it was very subtle at first and gradually became more and more brazen culminating with our current President, Barack Hussein Obama, in the guise of “equality,” making everything fair, leveling the playing field.

The speaker of the House recently buckled under the pressure and offered to increase taxes on those making over a million dollars a year. On the surface it looked conciliatory to me, but some in his own party rebuked him and rejected the compromise. Why? Because the fight is not about more taxes (stealing) but less spending, less inflation, preserving the shaky value of the dollar.

We need to hope and pray that Obama and Democrats, by and large, do not get their way in the next 4 days. God bless you and God bless America!
